The Chromebook Project
The Chromebook ProjectTurning Old Laptops Into Opportunity
In 2020, while teaching at St Leonard's in Exeter, Dez felt a real social injustice during lockdown.
Some children effortlessly engaged with remote learning on laptops at home, while others without devices were left isolated and unable to log in. Starting with a single online social media post asking people to donate old, slow laptops instead of throwing them away, Dez has since converted over 300 of these machines into fully functional Chromebooks and distributed them completely for free.
If you have a working laptop that has slowed to a crawl but doesn't need physical repairs, please contact us to arrange a drop-off. We will completely erase all data and install a fresh Chromebook operating system – it truly makes a massive difference!
All we ask is that the device still actually works (no matter how slow) and isn't broken, and that you sign an agreement allowing us to wipe the data. If you are able to wipe the data yourself that is always enormously appreciated, but we understand it is not always possible.
If you are in need of a laptop or tablet for your child, our answer is always "yes" as long as we have one in stock. There are no criteria to satisfy and no questions asked – if you need a device and we have one, we will give it to you for free.
Simply contact us with a request and we can explore getting one ready for you.
